Data Protection Lawyer Placement for a Top 25 International Firm
JMC Legal was instructed by a top 25 international law firm, ranked Tier 1 for both Commercial Law and Data Protection, to identify and place a specialist Data Protection lawyer into their private practice team. The search sat at the intersection of two of the most challenging recruitment markets in law: commercial private practice lawyers who are increasingly drawn towards in-house roles, and the narrow sub-set of those lawyers who hold genuine, high-level Data Protection expertise. Working on an exclusive basis, JMC Legal conducted a targeted, discreet approach across the international firm market, identifying a candidate from a rival firm who represented an exceptional match technically, commercially and culturally. The placement resulted in a promotion from Associate to Senior Associate and a significant salary uplift for the candidate, while delivering the specialist capability the firm needed in a market where few others could.

Joe BryantThe Background
Our client is a top 25 international law firm operating at the highest level of the market in terms of work quality, client profile and remuneration. Ranked Tier 1 for both Commercial Law and Data Protection, the firm advises leading organisations on some of the most complex and high-value mandates in the sector.
The firm required specialist legal talent to strengthen its Data Protection practice and approached JMC Legal on an exclusive basis, recognising that the nature of this search demanded a targeted, consultative approach rather than a conventional contingent recruitment process.
The Challenges
This search presented a layered and genuinely difficult talent challenge, with each factor compounding the last.
A shrinking private practice pipeline. Commercial lawyers are one of the most in-demand profiles in the in-house market. The trajectory from private practice to in-house is well established, and many of the strongest candidates are actively considering or pursuing that move. Recruiting commercial lawyers back into or across private practice requires a compelling and carefully articulated proposition.
A highly specialised requirement. Data Protection sits within commercial law but demands a distinct and developed skill set. General commercial lawyers would not meet the brief. The firm's clients require genuine expertise, meaning the talent pool narrows considerably beyond an already competitive market.
A like-for-like competitor landscape. The most qualified Data Protection lawyers at this level typically work at other international firms of comparable standing. Motivating a high-performing lawyer to move from one top-tier international firm to another requires more than a standard approach. The proposition needs to be specific, credible and clearly differentiated.
The need for discretion. Given the firm's profile and the seniority of the individuals being approached, direct outreach was not a viable route. Candidate engagement needed to be handled carefully and confidentially, through a trusted intermediary who could open doors without damaging relationships or reputation.
The Solution
JMC Legal secured exclusivity at the outset, ensuring the search was approached with the focus and rigour it required.
In-depth discovery. Joe conducted a detailed briefing with both the talent acquisition team and the relevant Partner to establish a full picture of the firm's proposition, including the specific qualities required technically and culturally, and importantly, the reasons why this firm represented a genuinely compelling move for the right candidate.
Targeted market mapping. Joe carried out a structured mapping exercise across the international firm market, identifying Data Protection lawyers of the right calibre and seniority. Eighteen individuals were identified and approached on a named, direct basis, referencing the firm and Partner specifically. This level of specificity generates a meaningfully stronger response than a generic market approach.
Collaborative shortlisting. Rather than a high-volume CV submission process, Joe worked closely with the client to agree a shortlist through a collaborative and transparent process. This approach reflects the trust-based, partnership model that JMC Legal operates, particularly in tight-knit markets where reputation on both sides matters.
Candidate management. From initial approach through to offer, Joe managed candidate expectations carefully, advising on the move, the platform and the commercial opportunity to ensure the right individuals progressed for the right reasons.
The Result
JMC Legal successfully placed a specialist Data Protection lawyer from a rival international firm into the client's practice.
The right profile secured. The candidate brought strong technical expertise in Data Protection and commercial law, directly addressing the firm's capability requirement in one of the most competitive talent markets in private practice.
Career progression for the candidate. The move represented a meaningful step forward, with the candidate receiving a promotion from Associate to Senior Associate alongside a considerable salary increase.
Exclusive, efficient process. Working on an exclusive basis allowed the search to be conducted with precision and discretion, protecting the firm's reputation and ensuring a controlled, high-quality process throughout.
Long-term capability added. The placement filled a genuine gap in the firm's commercial offering, strengthening its ability to service complex Data Protection mandates at the level its clients expect.
In one of the narrowest and most competitive talent pools in commercial law, JMC Legal delivered where a direct approach could not.
