Energy Senior Associate / Legal Director | 6+ Years PQE | Top 30 International Firm | Flexible location across the West Midlands & North

A rare opportunity to join one of the most active and fastest growing Energy practices in the UK market, working across the full spectrum of energy and infrastructure at a firm where energy is a genuine strategic priority at the highest level.

The Firm

A Top 30 international firm with a substantial national and global presence, recognised across the Legal 500 for the depth and quality of its Energy practice. With double digit revenue growth sustained over the past four to five years and energy identified as a central pillar of the firm's growth strategy under new leadership, this is a practice that is genuinely moving.

What makes this team different is the breadth of what it does and the way it does it. A full service Energy practice, the team understands energy from every point of entry and every practice area, operating as one joined up national team with no internal borders and a genuinely location agnostic model. The culture is collaborative, down to earth and unpretentious, with a group of people who are serious about the work without taking themselves too seriously.

The Role

The work is as varied as it gets in the energy market, spanning renewables, nuclear, green hydrogen, carbon capture, biomass, district energy schemes and large scale energy consumer mandates, with a client base comparable to the leading firms in this space.

On the projects side you will work across the full project lifecycle, from project construction documents and operation and maintenance arrangements through to feedstock agreements and route to market structures including power purchase agreements. You will need a solid awareness of planning and environmental dimensions and the ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships across major long term instructions, some of which involve working so closely with clients that the relationship resembles an embedded in-house counsel model.

Recent and current work includes the first transfer of nuclear reactors between major energy bodies, ongoing nuclear decommissioning authority instructions, green hydrogen mandates and a strong book of longstanding biomass clients. On the consumer side the team advises large manufacturers and national retailers on energy strategy, carbon footprint reduction and framework arrangements for solar PV across large national estates.

The team operates across offices on a one team basis with no borders, meaning work is shared nationally and location is not a barrier to accessing the best instructions or the most senior relationships.

The Ideal Candidate

  • An Energy lawyer at Senior Associate or Legal Director level, or an ambitious lawyer at 4+ years PQE looking to step up into a more senior role
  • A background in commercial energy projects, with exposure across the project lifecycle
  • In-house candidates from the energy sector are equally welcomed
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to operate as a trusted adviser on complex, long running mandates
  • Awareness of planning and environmental considerations as they interact with energy projects
  • Someone who thrives in a collaborative, flexible and genuinely collegiate environment

What's on Offer

  • A central role in a practice identified as a key strategic growth area at firm leadership level
  • Genuine progression and a clear route upwards within a growing team
  • Exposure to some of the most complex and high profile energy work in the UK market across all technologies
  • A truly flexible national model with no location barriers
  • A culture that is serious about its work and serious about its people, without the politics
