US Corporate Partner Placement for a Leading UK Law Firm

JMC Legal was retained by a leading UK law firm to identify and secure a senior US Corporate Partner for its London practice. Operating in one of the most competitive areas of the lateral partner market, the search required specialist market intelligence, strategic positioning and absolute discretion. The candidate had seven offers on the table and attracted significant City-wide attention throughout the process. JMC Legal managed every stage, from initial market mapping through to offer negotiation, ultimately securing an appointment that launched an entirely new corporate capability for the firm and delivered a substantial commercial uplift for the candidate.

The Background

Our client is a leading UK law firm with a strong track record in corporate and transactional work. With growing demand from US-connected clients and an increasing volume of complex cross-border mandates, the firm identified a clear strategic gap at partner level.

The objective was to appoint a senior US Corporate Partner in London who could launch a new corporate offering, strengthen the firm's international credentials and directly service high-value M&A, financial services and private equity matters with a US or cross-border dimension.

The firm understood that finding this calibre of individual would not be straightforward. US Corporate Partners with a portable book of business operate in a rarified part of the market. Identifying, engaging and successfully moving one requires more than a search process. It requires genuine market intelligence, trusted access and the ability to manage a highly pressurised negotiation without losing control of the outcome.

This was not a like-for-like replacement. It was a transformational hire.

The Challenge

US Corporate Partners with a substantial book of business are among the hardest profiles to place in the legal market. At the time of this search, the lateral partner market in London was exceptionally competitive, and this particular process attracted a level of attention that made an already difficult search considerably more complex.

A limited talent pool. The number of suitably qualified US-trained or US-experienced corporate partners active in the London market is small. Those who are genuinely mobile and open to a move are rarer still.

Exceptional competition. The candidate in question ultimately received seven offers from both UK and international law firms. The process was widely tracked across the City and covered in the legal press.

Candidate mindset. The partner had initially approached the market with a view to moving in-house, driven by structural frustrations at their existing firm. Without careful management, their client base and practice would have left private practice entirely.

The need for absolute discretion. Despite the public nature of the wider market interest, both the firm and the candidate required complete confidentiality throughout every stage of the process.

Strategic risk. A misjudged hire at this level carries significant commercial and reputational consequences. Internal networks and traditional recruitment methods were not a viable route for a search of this complexity and visibility.

The Solution

JMC Legal delivered a strategic, consultative partner search grounded in deep knowledge of the senior legal market. Our role went well beyond a standard introduction.

Market intelligence. We provided the firm with detailed insight into the US corporate partner landscape in London, covering candidate availability, mobility, compensation benchmarks and the competitive dynamics shaping the market at that time. This allowed the firm to enter the process with a clear and realistic picture of what it would take to win.

Strategic positioning. We advised the firm on how to position its proposition compellingly against rival offers, both commercially and in terms of long-term platform and growth opportunity. Standing out in a seven-offer scenario required more than a competitive package. It required a clearly articulated strategic narrative.

Redirecting the candidate. Through in-depth conversations, we identified that the partner's desire to move in-house was a reaction to frustration rather than a genuine change in direction. An in-house move would have required them to relinquish long-standing client relationships and significantly reduce the scope of their practice. We identified a private practice platform that directly addressed the issues they were facing and demonstrated why it represented a better long-term outcome on every measure.

Process management. We acted as a trusted intermediary throughout a high-pressure, multi-offer negotiation. We managed expectations on both sides, navigated sensitivities with care and maintained momentum at every stage, while ensuring full confidentiality was preserved despite the significant market interest surrounding the process.

The Result

The firm successfully appointed a highly experienced US Corporate Partner into its London practice in 2024.

New practice capability. The firm launched a corporate offering it did not previously have, materially expanding what it can deliver to clients across M&A, financial services and private equity with a US or international dimension.

Strengthened international platform. The hire significantly enhanced the firm's cross-border and US-facing credentials, reinforcing its position in the international corporate market and sending a clear signal to clients and competitors alike.

Strong outcome for the candidate. The partner secured a substantial uplift in base salary and bonus, retained their existing client base and found a platform aligned with their long-term ambitions. None of this would have been achievable through an in-house transition.

Market recognition. The appointment attracted notable industry attention and further demonstrated JMC Legal's ability to handle high-profile, complex partner searches with precision, discretion and commercial judgement.

The appointment materially changed what the firm could offer its clients and reshaped its position in the market.
