Sole Legal Counsel Placement for an International Fitness and Wellness Brand

JMC Legal was instructed by the UK subsidiary of a leading international fitness and wellness brand to identify a sole Legal Counsel following an extensive internal search spanning nine months. The role presented a genuinely rare combination of constraints: a fixed onsite working policy at a location outside London, a precise seniority requirement, a defined budget, and a need for genuine cultural alignment with the brand. Working over three months, JMC Legal conducted exhaustive market mapping across a tightly defined commuter radius, supplemented by nationwide networking and targeted advertising for relocation candidates. The successful candidate was a senior lawyer with no active online presence who had been with their employer for nine years and was not looking to move. A passionate long-distance runner with national-level competitive experience, they were an exceptional fit technically, geographically and culturally.

The Background

Our client is the UK subsidiary of a globally recognised fitness and wellness brand, operating at the premium end of the market and widely regarded as a leader in its sector. The UK operation functions from a dedicated headquarters outside London, with a close-knit team and a strong cultural identity built around health, performance and wellbeing.

The business required a sole Legal Counsel to take full ownership of all UK legal matters, reporting into an overseas General Counsel. The role was central to the UK operation and carried genuine responsibility across a broad range of commercial, contractual and regulatory matters.

Having conducted an extensive internal search over nine months without securing the right appointment, the business instructed JMC Legal to take on the mandate.

The Challenges

This was one of the most precisely defined and genuinely constrained briefs we have worked on in the in-house legal market. Each individual requirement was manageable in isolation. Together, they produced an exceptionally small pool of viable candidates.

Location and attendance policy. The role is based at a business park approximately 90 minutes from London, with a company-wide policy of five days per week onsite. This immediately ruled out the majority of the senior in-house legal market and restricted the search to lawyers within a realistic commute of the site or those open to relocation.

A precise seniority requirement. The business needed someone senior enough to operate independently as a sole counsel and take full ownership of the UK legal function, but sufficiently hands-on to manage technical work directly without a supporting team. This mid-senior profile sits in a narrow band of the market and is consistently in high demand.

Cultural alignment. As a client-facing representative of a leading fitness brand, the role required someone with a genuine connection to health and fitness, not simply a professional interest. This was a meaningful filter in an already limited pool.

A defined budget. The business was working within clear parameters on remuneration and was not in a position to offer above-market rates to attract candidates who might otherwise require additional incentive to consider the location or onsite commitment.

The combination of these factors explained why nine months of direct searching had not produced a result. This was not a role that would be filled through conventional advertising or a broad-market approach.

The Solution

JMC Legal approached the search methodically and with a clear strategy, recognising from the outset that speed was a high priority for the client.

Exhaustive local market mapping. We conducted a thorough mapping exercise of senior lawyers within a 45-minute commute radius of the site, working through every viable profile in that geography regardless of whether they were active in the market or had any visible online presence.

National networking for relocation candidates. In parallel, we engaged a highly targeted cohort of lawyers from across the UK who had either previously relocated for a role or indicated openness to doing so. These conversations were handled carefully, with a clear and honest presentation of the opportunity, the location and the onsite requirement.

Targeted advertising. We ran the role across a range of relevant job boards to ensure full market coverage, capturing any candidates within or open to the commute radius who may not have been identified through direct search.

Cultural screening. Given the importance of brand alignment, we incorporated an assessment of genuine interest in health and fitness into our candidate conversations from the outset, ensuring this was not treated as a secondary consideration.

The search ran over three months, reflecting the care and thoroughness required to do it properly in a market this constrained.

The Result

JMC Legal identified and placed a senior lawyer based in the local area who had no active online presence and had been with their existing employer for nine years. They were not job seeking and would not have been reachable through any standard recruitment or advertising process.

The right profile. The candidate brought the precise level of seniority and hands-on technical capability the role required, with a broad commercial background suited to the demands of a sole counsel position.

Genuine cultural fit. A keen marathon runner who had competed at national level earlier in their career, the candidate had a deep and authentic connection to the fitness industry. The opportunity was one they responded to with genuine enthusiasm.

A candidate the market could not surface. Nine months of direct searching had not reached this individual. They were only identifiable through the depth of local market mapping and the breadth of outreach that a dedicated, specialist search makes possible.

A strong outcome for the candidate. The individual is set to begin their new role imminently, making a move that aligns their professional expertise with a sector they are personally invested in.

This placement demonstrates what a structured, patient and exhaustive search process can deliver where conventional approaches have already failed.
