Head of Legal for a Professional Formula E Racing Team
JMC Legal was instructed on an exclusive basis by a professional Formula E racing team to identify a senior leader capable of heading up both legal and HR functions within a fast-paced, high-pressure sporting environment. With a new season imminent and limited time available from the leadership team, the search required a recruitment partner who could operate independently, move quickly and deliver a precise shortlist without the need for extensive client involvement. Working across Northamptonshire and the surrounding area, we identified four ideal candidates from across the sport, automotive and technology sectors. The client proceeded to first interview with a single candidate, an experienced operations leader from elite professional sport, and made the hire within one week of the search completing.

Daniel TuorThe Background
Our client is a professional Formula E racing team competing at the highest level of international motorsport. Operating with a lean, high-performance team structure, the organisation directs its resources with precision, ensuring maximum investment into the development and performance of the cars.
The business required a senior leader to take ownership of both its legal and HR functions, reporting directly into the senior leadership team. The role demanded someone capable of operating as a true generalist at a strategic level, supporting an organisation that functions under the intense time pressures and competitive demands of elite professional sport.
With a new season approaching rapidly, the Team Principal and CFO had limited bandwidth to dedicate to a prolonged hiring process. They required a recruitment partner who could take full ownership of the search, deliver a focused shortlist and move at pace without compromising on quality.
The Challenges
This search presented a distinctive set of challenges that made a broad-market or unstructured approach unworkable from the outset.
A genuinely broad remit. The role spanned legal and HR leadership, requiring a candidate with the seniority and range to own both functions independently within a complex, high-performance organisation. This profile sits outside the conventional in-house legal market and demanded lateral thinking in terms of where the right candidate might be found.
The sporting environment. Professional motorsport operates under significant commercial pressure, tight regulatory constraints and a culture that demands composure, discretion and adaptability. Not every experienced legal or HR professional is suited to that environment. Relevant sector experience was a meaningful differentiator.
Geographic constraints. The team is based at one of the UK's most prominent motorsport venues in Northamptonshire. With senior in-person presence required, the search was anchored to a specific and relatively contained geographic area, limiting the available talent pool considerably.
Budget discipline. As with many organisations in elite sport, resource allocation is carefully managed to maximise investment in performance. The hire needed to represent strong commercial value without compromising on the calibre of the individual.
Speed. The approaching season created a genuine time pressure. The leadership team needed the process to move quickly and could not commit significant time to screening and interviewing. The search had to be done right, first time.
The Solution
Our Head of In House Legal Recruitment, Daniel Tudor, took on the role on an exclusive mandate, allowing the search to be managed with the focus and efficiency the brief demanded.
Targeted regional search. We conducted a structured search across Northamptonshire and the surrounding counties, identifying senior candidates with the right combination of legal and HR experience within a commutable distance of the site.
Cross-sector candidate mapping. Recognising that the ideal profile might not sit squarely within the traditional in-house legal market, we cast a wider net across candidates from sport, automotive and technology backgrounds, sectors that share comparable operational pace, regulatory complexity and leadership demands.
Precise shortlisting. From a broad initial screening process, we isolated four candidates who genuinely met the brief across seniority, sector fit, geographic suitability and cultural alignment with a high-performance sporting environment. Each was fully assessed and briefed before being presented to the client.
Autonomous process management. Given the leadership team's limited availability, our team managed the process independently throughout, handling candidate engagement, expectation management and logistics to ensure the client's time was used exclusively at the decision-making stage.
The Result
The client chose to interview a single candidate from the shortlist of four. One week after the search concluded, the hire was made.
One shortlist. One interview. One hire. The precision of the shortlisting process meant the client committed their limited time to a single candidate who was right for the role, achieving a result in one week from first interview to offer.
The right sector background. The successful candidate was an experienced COO from an English Premiership rugby club, with a strong track record of leading legal, HR and operations functions within elite professional sport. The parallels between high-performance rugby and motorsport were immediately relevant and well understood by both parties.
An efficient process for a time-pressured client. The Team Principal and CFO were able to remain focused on race season preparation throughout, with our team Legal managing every stage of the search independently and to a high standard.
Immediate operational impact. The candidate is now in post, bringing the team's legal, HR and operational processes to a new level of structure and capability as the season gets underway.
This placement demonstrates our ability to move quickly and decisively in time-critical searches, identifying the right candidate from an adjacent sector and delivering a result that a conventional legal recruitment approach would not have reached.
