Marine Insurance Associate/Senior Associate | 2-8 PQE | London | Top 30 International Firm
An excellent opportunity for a Marine Insurance Solicitor to join a growing, internationally recognised team, handling complex, high-value marine insurance and shipping disputes. Offering exposure to a broad range of contentious matters, a diverse international client base and the opportunity to develop within an established practice.

The Firm

This is a Top 30 international firm whose reputation has been earned through the quality of its work and the strength of its people, not simply its scale. Highly ranked by both Legal 500 and Chambers across a number of practice areas, the firm combines genuine sector depth with a culture that places real value on collaboration and long-term development.

The environment here is notably different from firms of comparable standing. Teams are structured to support one another, lawyers are given meaningful responsibility and the firm's investment in its people is reflected in its commitment to professional development and progression. Modern working practices and legal technology sit alongside traditional strengths, giving lawyers the tools to deliver complex work efficiently and sustainably.

The Team

The Marine team is an established, internationally focused practice handling some of the market's most complex and high-profile marine insurance and shipping claims globally.

Acting for a diverse client base of UK and international insurers, P&I clubs, shipowners, charterers, freight forwarders, port and terminal operators and commodity traders, the team has developed a strong reputation for its technical expertise and ability to handle sophisticated cross-border disputes.

The practice covers the full spectrum of marine insurance litigation, advising on coverage, defence and subrogation, alongside wider shipping disputes. This includes hull and cargo claims, war risks, marine liability, charterers' liability, reinsurance, recovery actions and international trade disputes.

With continued investment in the London practice, this is an excellent time to join a team looking to strengthen its capabilities and build on its existing market presence. The work is varied, international in nature and offers exposure to an impressive range of clients and complex disputes.

The Role

This is an excellent opportunity for a Marine Insurance Solicitor with 2-8 years' PQE to join a growing London team, handling complex marine insurance claims and developing their expertise within an internationally recognised practice.

The role will offer exposure across a broad range of marine insurance and shipping matters, including:

  • Marine Insurance Litigation: Managing complex claims involving hull, cargo, war risks, marine liability, mortgagee's interest insurance and yachts.
  • Wet Shipping Claims: Advising on salvage, collision and general average matters.
  • Dry Shipping Disputes: Handling charterparty, ship sale and shipbuilding disputes.
  • Coverage & Recovery: Advising insurers on coverage disputes, defence, subrogation and recovery actions.
  • Reinsurance & International Trade: Working on reinsurance matters, charterers' liability claims and international trade disputes.

You will take responsibility for managing a varied caseload, providing drafting and advisory support on insurance policies and negotiating complex claims. The role will also involve advising on contentious matters through court proceedings and arbitration, including LMAA arbitration.

For those joining at Senior Associate level, there will also be an opportunity to take on a broader role within the practice. This will include playing an active part in developing client relationships and supporting the team's business development initiatives, helping to strengthen its market presence. You will also supervise and mentor junior lawyers, contributing to knowledge-sharing and the continued development of the wider team.

The position offers a genuinely varied workload within an internationally connected practice, with the opportunity to take ownership of complex matters and play an important role in the team's continued growth.

Requirements

  • Qualified Solicitor in England & Wales with 2-8 years' PQE and experience in marine insurance litigation, ideally gained within a recognised shipping or insurance practice.
  • Strong experience handling marine insurance claims, including coverage disputes, recovery actions and associated contentious matters.
  • Good understanding of marine insurance policies and the ability to provide clear, commercially focused drafting and advisory support.
  • Experience of court proceedings and arbitration, particularly London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA) arbitration.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation and communication skills, with the confidence to manage complex matters and work directly with clients.
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload independently while working collaboratively with colleagues.
  • For Senior Associate candidates, experience supervising or mentoring junior lawyers and an interest in contributing to business development would be advantageous.
  • Additional language skills would be advantageous but are not essential.

The firm offers a hybrid working arrangement, providing flexibility while maintaining strong team collaboration and connectivity.
