Does discrimination still exist in the hiring process?
We’ll let you in on a little fact, discrimination is not just based on race, but also age, gender and disability status. Unfortunately, it is still alive and kicking in the 21st Century.
The mere mention of race in an application or interview can make applicants feel like they are not being treated equally. It is important for employers to be aware of this as it could lead to a biased hiring practice.
What should you do if you experience it?
This is a difficult question to answer. It largely depends on the situation. However, if the interviewer presents their racist views in an open conversation and you are uncomfortable with them, you should not be afraid to express your opinion about it.
You should remain cool and not fall for any subtle or sly digs, maintain your professionalism and report them following the interview, all companies should have anti discriminatory policies, therefore you can follow their process.
A Viable Claim
Ensure you understood the implications of what has been said and identify clearly where the discrimination occurred before reporting.
