Hunting for a job right now?

It’s never been more important to nail that CV and cover letter/email).

So, don’t make these 5 common mistakes:

1. Failing to follow the job advert instructions.

If you’re told to answer questions instead of sending a CV, don’t send your CV! Ignoring what you’re being asked to do is a quick way to get yourself eliminated.

2. Your cover letter is generic.

Target your cover letter to the job you’re applying for. Mention why this job is exciting to you and the specific skills that match what they’re looking for.

3. Your CV is riddled with empty cliches.

Take these overused words out:

  • Hardworking
  • Passionate
  • Forward-thinking

Avoid these because they sound empty. Instead, include examples that demonstrate your abilities. Saved the company £10 grand? Brought in a big client? Won an award? Put that in.

4. You sound down.

Not having a job sucks. But don’t try and gain sympathy, be upbeat and let them see your talent shine.

5. You put your picture or date-of-birth in the CV

Unless you’re a model or actor this isn’t necessary and could lead to someone ruling you out through their unconscious bias creeping in.
