One Size Fits One

Is the office a great place to work?

Is home working the answer?

There isn’t one answer to this.

For you, working from home might be perfect with space, quiet, resources and plenty of support in place. For others, it could mean persuading an unhappy toddler to watch yet another episode of Paw Patrol while they’re in a Zoom meeting.

Everyone is different. It’s so important for managers to understand their preference doesn’t‌ work for everyone.

How we like to work is personal to us. For every worker who finds commuting to the office a grind. There’s someone who’s putting on a podcast and loving the journey. For every worker glad to be back to in-person meetings, there’s another overwhelmed by it.

One size fits one person.

So, what’s the solution? Flexible working is really about choices and stepping back to recognise people need to find a way that works for them.

The goal is productivity, engagement, motivation and our team’s wellbeing. You may not be able to offer every type of work freedom to everyone, but it’s good to not focus on your own experience as the answer to everyone else’s problems. There’s plenty of evidence-based data out there to use instead.
