Got an interview for a legal position coming up?

Get familiar with the STAR technique.

Whether it’s pupillage, a job at a law firm or an in-house role, the STAR method is one worth practising. It’s common in interviews to be asked for examples to prove your competency. This is where the STAR technique comes in handy.

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result.

Situation: Give an outline of the situation. Describe the setting, and any challenges and expectations.

Task: Specify what task you were aiming to achieve and what was expected of you.

Action: Then describe your actions and contribution. Focus on the steps you took and strategies you used to tackle the issue.

Result: Finally, share the results of your actions and lessons learnt. If you can, give evidence of those results to back it up.

The STAR method is a great way to keep your mind focussed on talking through the skills and qualities competency questions are testing you for. It’s a good idea to practice a few beforehand so you’re ready for those questions.

They might ask you about how you handled a difficult client. An example of working under pressure. A time you showed leadership skills. When you had to work as a team. When a conflict arose.

The STAR technique is a way of getting rid of the fluff and keeping your answers concise.

With this in your back pocket, you may just up your chances of landing the job. Good luck!
